Why Yoga?
I remember nearly 12 years ago a friend telling me I should try Yoga. She was convinced I would love it, she told me so for years. But I didn't really see what the big deal was. To me, it was just another form of exercise. Maybe you can relate. Then about 10 years later I was desperate for some kind of exercise I could do indoors. There happened to be a yoga studio near my daughter's school that had a great deal for two weeks. I went almost every day. I was hooked. It felt great.
One reason I love Yoga is what it does for my mind. In every class you practice relaxation, emptying your mind and letting your body rest, really rest. In time you become more and more aware of what it feels like to be totally relaxed, mentally and physically. Then something amazing happens. You remember and know that feeling so well you can call on that memory and feel its effects any time life gets a little or a lot stressful. I've noticed the effect is stronger with a regular practice, which I can explain about more later. But if you've wondered, like me, "what's the big deal?" Imagine all the times you or your kids could use such a gift, something to take the edge off, at least a little, and allow you to think clearly, and enjoy your life.
I'll leave you with a personal story to demonstrate. Last weekend we were at Lake Powell and my husband was jumping nearly 10 feet from the lofty edge into the cool, clear water. I wanted to try it but standing at the edge I could feel the fear rising and couldn't help but want to back up and walk down to the water. (I'm extremely cautious when it comes to that kind of thing), instead, feeling empowered, I took calming breaths, called on that feeling (something I also do in prayer by the way), said a prayer :-), and believing I would be okay, went for it. It was so fun! It was such a hot day the water felt amazing, and the jump was exhilarating! In the grand scheme of things it may not be such a big deal on the other hand isn't it the little things we do each day that shape who we become? So if you or your children have never tried Yoga, hopefully this will open your mind to it. You just might love it. I promise you will feel it's effects on and off the mat.
